What to Expect: Day 1 at a Skilled Nursing Facility
What happens in the first 24 hours your loved one is at a skilled nursing facility?
Check-in
Your loved one will begin their stay with check-in, where facility staff will get your loved one set up for their stay.
Initial Assessment
After check-in, the Charge Nurse assigned to your loved one will do an initial assessment of their physical state and routines. This will be a full, thorough exam.
Medical and Therapy Evaluations
During the first 24 hours, your loved one is in the facility, they will also be seen by a physician and receive evaluations from any necessary therapists, such as occupational, physical, or speech therapists.
Medication Review
Because medication administration is an important part of your loved one’s recovery, the nursing staff will ensure they have reviewed and confirmed the dose and timing of medications.
Ensuring Comfort
The transition to a skilled nursing facility can feel stressful. The first 24 hours in the facility also include making sure your loved one is comfortable and can have their needs met during their stay.
Change can be challenging. It’s normal for your loved one to need time in the first few days to adjust to their new environment and routine.
